The Seven Areas of Learning

The EYFS divides learning into seven areas. These are not silos; they overlap and intertwine, much like the roots of a tree. These areas are split into 'Prime' and 'Specific' categories.

The Prime Areas are the most fundamental. They begin at birth and are essential for healthy development and future learning. They are:

• 1. Communication and Language: The foundation of all learning. It involves giving children a rich language environment and developing their confidence to express themselves.
• 2. Physical Development: Beyond just moving, this involves health, self-care, and the fine motor skills needed for writing later on.
• 3. Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED): This helps children to develop a positive sense of themselves, form relationships, and manage their feelings.

As children grow, and as the prime areas become more established, we look towards the Specific Areas:

• 4. Literacy: Encouraging a love of reading and the beginnings of writing.
• 5. Mathematics: Developing a deep understanding of numbers, shapes, and spatial reasoning.
• 6. Understanding the World: Guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community.
• 7. Expressive Arts and Design: Providing opportunities to play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as sharing thoughts and feelings through art, music, and role-play.

In the earliest years (birth to three), the focus is almost entirely on the Prime areas. A child who cannot communicate their needs or who feels emotionally insecure will find it very difficult to engage with mathematics or literacy later on. By nurturing the Prime areas first, we build a sturdy house that will stand for a lifetime.
